New Pop-Ups Opening in SF’s Empty Union Square Storefronts
More pop-ups and permanent shops coming to Union Square thanks to “Vacant to Vibrant” program.
Downtown SF’s major storefront revival program, Vacant to Vibrant, is picking up steam with a fresh batch of pop-ups and permanent small businesses landing in Union Square and beyond. The program, launched in 2023 by the City of San Francisco and nonprofit SF New Deal, is all about filling empty downtown spaces with small, local businesses — and it’s working.
Since launch, 21 storefronts have already been activated, with 25 more on the way over the next year. The latest expansion includes two new pop-ups in Union Square, plus a creative arts space in SoMa.
What’s Opening Soon:
- Al Pastor Papi (232 O’Farrell St.)
Famous for its Mexico City-style al pastor tacos, this Mission-based street food favorite is popping up in Union Square for the first time. It’s a big move for the beloved food truck turned pop-up, bringing late-night taco energy to one of SF’s busiest shopping districts. - Nooworks (236 Powell St.)
The Mission-based fashion label known for size-inclusive, artist-designed prints is expanding to Union Square. The brand’s new pop-up brings color, comfort, and a dose of local creativity to Powell Street. - Craftivity (215 Fremont, Suite 1)
A hands-on craft studio offering workshops like concrete lamp-making and flower-dyeing. Great for team events or just reconnecting with your creative side.
Permanent Shops Just Signed Long-Term Leases:
Thanks to program support, four former pop-up businesses are now going permanent with multi-year leases.
- Hungry Crumbs (215 Fremont St., 5B)
Serving up wild cookie combos like Ube and Baklava Dough. Hours: Mon–Fri, 10am–6pm. - Koolfi Creamery (50 Fremont St.)
Indian-inspired small-batch ice cream made with local dairy. They’ve got a shop in San Leandro and now a downtown presence too. Hours: Mon–Fri, Noon–6pm. - Paper Son Coffee (303 2nd St., N102)
Asian American-inspired coffee flavors from a brand rooted in local immigration history. Hours: Mon & Fri, 8:30am–2:30pm; Tue–Thu, 8am–2pm. - Studio Aurora (302 Valencia St.)
A quirky, globally inspired deli from the team behind Alimentari Aurora. Now calling the Mission home after a successful downtown pop-up run.
What’s Next?
The program is expanding, with new storefronts set to pop up each month in different downtown neighborhoods. Backed by major funding (including a recent $500K boost from JPMorganChase), Vacant to Vibrant is focused on turning empty retail spaces into active, locally-owned destinations.
